ClimateHaven Dispatch No. 22: Olympic Edition

It is impossible to watch The Olympics without witnessing the impact of climate change on athletes in Paris and around the world. Increased rainfall exacerbated unsafe conditions in the Seine (despite a $1.4B abatement effort and the mayor’s Seine swim), causing the postponement of triathlon events. Extreme heat and humidity led to adjusting schedules for the safety of endurance athletes (and fans alike) In Paris and Tokyo 2020. And rising temperatures are decreasing the number of potential Winter Olympics host cities. Future Games may even move to a decentralized model, reducing the impact on one single host site. Needless to say, it is imperative for The Olympics to adjust as our planet’s climate crisis deepens.

ClimateHaven founders are building tech-based solutions aimed at mitigating environmental impacts. Below, we’ve culled the content that's helping them build a better future.

  1. This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate by Naomi Klein; a real classic (2014) about mid 2010s American capitalism and issues with climate change.
  2. The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert; eye-opening that climate change is just one issue, and all of the rest of humanity has a large impact on the rest of the planet.
  3. The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future by Sebastian Mallaby; really cool insights into how VC’s make money and their return profile – and why this works to scale companies.

Perry Bakas, Oxylus

  1. Cradle to Cradle - William McDonough and Michael Braungart, Must-read for anyone designing products... The keynote book of design for eliminating waste.
  2. Folks, This Ain't Normal - Joel Salatin, All about our food system, written by a very fun author who lives and breathes what he preaches.
  3. The Hungry Tide - Amitav Ghosh, Climate injustice, written brilliantly.
  4. Plus, the classics: Speed & Scale by John Doerr, Regeneration and sequel Drawdownby Paul Hawken.

Jackie Logan, Raise Green

  1. Norton Rose Fulbright's CURRENTS - Podcast from top legal firm in renewable energy project finance. To-the-point value add with insights on deals and pricing. Not to be missed.
  2. The Energy Gang - Podcast backed by Wood McKenzie, a global data/solutions platform/renewable energy, energy and natural resources supply chain. Covers a variety of topics and actionable insights.

Maggie Boreham, Threadmap

  1. The podcast "Sustainably Speaking" (a quick listen while on-the-go)

Startup Announcements

EVident Battery has won a $10,000 Product Development Grant from FORGE. This grant provides non-dilutive funding for a cleantech startup focused on sustainability and efficiency. Read more here. CEO Jinqiang Ning presented at the Mitsubishi Electric Innovation Summit, alongside VCs and fellow startups about EVident's comprehensive inspection solution to enhance the clarity of EV battery pack health.

Matcha has been awarded a $335,000 non-dilutive grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. This funding will significantly advance Matcha's efforts in deploying turnkey EV charging stations in multifamily properties, powered by their innovative MatchaOS management software. Oxylus Energy has been nominated for Emerging Company of the Year as part of the Green Future Gala Awards hosted by the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC). The award seeks to recognize rising star organizations demonstrating innovation, rapid sales growth, and leadership. Vote for Oxylus here.

Raise Green has successfully facilitated over $10 million in investments toward climate solutions. From expanding community solar projects to highlighting regional green banks, Raise Green has made a significant impact on the climate community. CoFounder, Co-CEO, and Chief Investment Officer Jackie Logan was interviewed on the Planet First Action podcast where she talks about transforming private capital and the deployment of the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

ReVert has been nominated for Clean Energy Company of the Year as part of the Green Future Gala Awards hosted by the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC).This award is presented to a clean energy company that has made a significant impact on the region's clean energy industry and distinguishes itself from its peers.
